You'll never "Guess Who" has the top Canadian single of all time?!

Author Bob Mersereau recently published his latest book titled, "The Top 100 Canadian Singles" where Amercian Woman by The Guess Who received the nod for the No.1 Canadian song of all time.  Bob Mersereau polled some 800 musicians, journalists, promoters, retailers, music industry executives, managers and music fans for their take on the Canadian music scene over the past 60 years.  Interesting to note that songwriter Randy Bachman who penned the classic "American Woman"song boasted eight of the top 100 songs that made the list.  Bachman's contributions to bands such as: The Guess Who, Bachman-Turner Overdrive and Trooper make him a serious candidate for most influential Canadian rock musician of all time.  Coming in at No.2 was Neil Young and his tune "Heart of Gold"

Below is the list of the Top 20:

  1. American Woman/No Sugar Tonight, The Guess Who (1970)
  2. Heart of Gold, Neil Youung (1972)
  3. The Weight, The Band (1968)
  4. Summer of '69, Bryan Adams (1985)
  5. Hallelujah, Leonard Cohen (1984)
  6. Born to be Wild , Steppenwolf (1968)
  7. If You Could Read My Mind, Gordon Lightfoot (1970)
  8. Takin' Care of Business, Bachman-Turner Overdrive (1974)
  9. Four Strong Winds, Ian & Sylvia (1963)
  10. Snowbird, Anne Murray (1970)
  11. Big Yellow Taxi, Joni Mitchell (1970)
  12. Tom Sawyer, Rush (1981)
  13. Try, Blue Rodeo (1987)
  14. New Orleans is Sinking, The Tragically Hip (1989)
  15. The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, Gordon Lightfoot (1976)
  16. Suzanne, Leonard Cohen (1967)
  17. Life is a Highway, Tom Cochrane (1991)
  18. These Eyes, The Guess Who (1969)
  19. Sundown, Gordon Lightfoot (1974)
  20. Underwhelmed, Sloan (1992)

Likely, the debate will rage as to who should have made The Top 100 list and those that should have been excluded.  The reality is there is no perfect list or mostly right list for that matter!  Music is a personal thing where the individual feels or remembers exactly what they were doing or where they were when they first heard that special song.  I have several happy and positive memories from the music of my generation, the ones of past and those of today.  I salute Mr. Mersereau's effort to give us all, albeit a brief glimpse of the many incredible and inspirational Canadian artists that have helped shape this country's rich musical culture.

Sincerely,

Jason Neumann
