Last night, my family, friends and I had the good fortune to participate in the first ever Angels in the Night in Kitchener Waterloo. The good folks from Invis-Mortgage Intelligence established this charity and have been helping local homeless shelters across Canada for the past ten years. Lori Pollice and Barb Morgan were instrumental in bringing this worthy cause to Kitchener Waterloo.
After a wildly successful fundraising event in November at McCabes, supplies were purchased in conjunction with the needs of the local shelters. Last night, 29 volunteers wearing yellow ponchos loaded a bus and set out to three local homeless shelters.
The first stop was Mary's Place. This is an emergency shelter at the YWCA Kitchener Waterloo. We formed a line off the bus to the front door and passed the items from volunteer to volunteer. When we finished, a representative came on the bus to thank us. She mentioned they serve a number of immigrant families new to Canada who have nothing. Donations are still required - http://ywcakw.on.ca/women_emergency_shelter.php
From there, it was on to ROOF which is an acronym for Reaching Our Outdoor Friends. This local charity is dedicated to helping homeless youths and youths-at-risk. The director there was clearly touched as he shared that our donation would make today like Christmas for these kids. To donate, visit http://roof-agency.net
Our last stop was the House of Friendship. Founded in 1939, this charity annually helps over 42,000 people living on low income. To find out more visit http://houseoffriendship.org.
Thank you to all the volunteers for a great evening of teamwork and giving back to those less fortunate in Kitchener Waterloo. Brigitte and I felt it was important for our kids to see firsthand that not everyone has it as good as we do. A special thank you to Lori Pollice at Invis for allowing us to participate.
