Can We Trust the Media To Get the Story Right?

A recent article on January real estate sales in the Waterloo Region Record begs the question:  Can we trust the media to get it right?  Despite having a press release from the Kitchener-Waterloo Association of Realtors, the Record managed to write their own narrative in an article from February 5, 2015.

The first line of the article indicated that house sales in Kitchener and Waterloo fell 9.9% year-over-year.  In fact, house sales declined less than 2% in January.

Likewise, the erroneous Record article cited the average sale price declining 1.6% in January.  In fact, it rose 2.4% year-over-year.  The statistics the Record cited applied to "all area" sales which would include anything outside of Kitchener Waterloo ie) Baden, New Hamburg, Elmira etc.

Regular readers of this Kitchener Waterloo real estate blog know this Realtor places a premium on getting the details right.

  1. Robert Atkinson 02/12/2015 at 9:44 AM I hope you wrote in to the Editor to point out the inaccuracies. I guess the papers are having a hard time now that more folks get their news from the internet as it happens.
