Real Estate 101 - Choosing a Real Estate Agent to Help You Sell Your Home

Get a real estate agent. It is usually best to use a real estate agent when selling a home. They know the market and will put your home for sale in the multiple listing service, which is a database of homes listed for sale. Your home will get much more exposure with a real estate pro than without. These people are also good at steering your clear of any pitfalls in the selling process you may have not even been aware of. There may be inspection requirements or other details the agent can help you with.

Interview three agents for the job of selling your home. It is perfectly acceptable to interview several agents. Tell them in advance that you are interviewing three agents. This lets them know you are serious and to bring their "A-game" to the first meeting. It is also quite acceptable to have them meet you at your house. This gives them a chance to inspect your house, make suggestions, and you can have them fit into your schedule.

Questions to ask the real estate person:

1. How long have you been in real estate?

2. How many homes did you sell last year?

3. If I hire you for the job, how would you market my home, besides putting the home into the multiple listing service?

4. What sort of updates should I expect from you after the sign goes in the yard?

5. What is your commission?

It is important not to base your decision solely on the agent's commission. A savvy, veteran real estate person who's sold homes in your neighborhood in the past is a valuable ally. Make sure you feel comfortable with the person. Remember, the sale of a home is a difficult, sometimes drawn-out process. It's best to use an agent you feel comfortable dealing with.
