Collingwood, Ontario is well known for its beautiful collection of heritage century homes with a total of 256 properties as well as more than 20 site-specific properties designed under the Ontario Heritage Act.
One of the oldest surviving brick dwellings in Collingwood dating back to the mid 1800’s has been restored.Known as the Tremont hotel, built in 1889, this heritage building is now home to the Tremont Café and Tremont Studios.
Located at 80 Simcoe Street, the Tremont upheld an authentic restoration in 2010 to bring back its original look. From rags to riches, the Tremont now gleams with creativity and vibrancy.Restorative builders, Richard and Anke Lex, were presented with Heritage Awards for their outstanding work brining back the original architecture at the Tremont and Tremont Annex, which is now home to the The Enterprise Bulletin.
With the restoration of the Tremont at 80 Simcoe Street, the corner of Simcoe and St. Paul streets has become alive with vitality – ‘just the way Richard and Anke Lex envisioned it’. The Lexes, who had restored two late 19th-century storefronts on Hurontario Street, saw an opportunity to convert a ‘sad relic from the past’ into an originally restored building boasting beauty and art.
The Tremont was once a 24-room hotel for over 100 years with a bar attached that eventually escaped demolition to become home to The Bay School of Art featuring nine artist studios, four third-floor apartments and the Tremont Cafe and Elihu Book Room: a dynamic bistro run by Collingwood newcomers Christophe and Wispy Boivin.
The Town of Collingwood was the first municipality in Canada to have a Heritage Conservation District included on the prestigious list of Canada’s Historic Places. The Tremont is one of the last remaining 19th-century hotel buildings in the Collingwood Heritage District.
The Tremont is just one of a few hundred historical heritage buildings. For a list of other historical homes, visit Heritage Buildings in Collingwood. Welcome to Heritage Collingwood where you can "live, work and play!"
