This year marked the 75th year for the Canadian Cancer’s Society .The Relay for Life took place July 12th-13th, 2013. I spoke with Roberta Offord who has been involved with Relay for the last 8 years on how the event faired.
There were 10 teams in total with approximately 10 people per team, team numbers were down therefore the total raised was lower but the outcome was great nonetheless. As of July 19th the total raised was $27,400. With “On-line” donations still trickling in the day of the event and shortly after.
CENTURY 21 Millennium Inc., had the honour of being Corporate Sponsor for the “Survivors”. Roberta Offord, Betty Hancey, Lorraine Bull, Tina Rettka, Brenda Armstrong and Monika Gibson prepared food for the reception for the Survivors following the first lap of the walk which honours survivors and their care givers. Brokers of Record, Joanne Evans and Martin Minda participated as well. Joanne Evans and Richard Offord read out the names of the participating survivors from the stage prior to the “Survivors Lap”. School children prepared banners and the whole procession was lead by A piper around the track to mark the beginning of the event.
Roberta’s favourite moment as well as the favourite moment of many is the “Survivors Lap” with the luminary candles lighting the entire track just after dusk, with an emotional walk around reading messages and realizing just how many people are affected by cancer in our community.
WE all hope to be involved in next years event hopefully with more teams, spectators and SURVIVORS!
