Focus On...Caswell Hill!

Caswell Hill got its name from an early homesteader, Robert Caswell, one of the Temperance Colonists of 1883.  It's an area with a mix of beautiful character homes first built around 1905, tiny war-time houses, and newer houses.  Caswell Hill is a diverse community nestled between two thriving economic areas, the downtown core and 33rd Street.

Streets are laid out east and west, avenues are laid out running north and south. Streets increment in number as travel heads northward. Avenues increment alphabetically as travel proceeds west. The whole of the Caswell Hill community is also laid out in a grid pattern.

Saskatoon Railway Station is one of many Saskatoon buildings listed in the Canadian Register of Historic Places.  It is a Chateau style station which was built in 1907.  It is located on Idylwyld Drive North, which used to be called Avenue A.

POLITICS

Buena Vista exists within the federal electoral district of Saskatoon West. It is currently represented by Kelly Block of the Conservative Party of Canada.

Provincially, the area straddles the constituencies of Saskatoon Massey Place, represented by Cam Broten of the Saskatchewan NDP, and Saskatoon Centre, represented by David Forbes of the Saskatchewan NDP..

In Saskatoon's non-partisan municipal politics, Caswell Hill lies within ward 2. It is currently represented by Councillor Pat Lorje.

SCHOOLS

The first school in Caswell was Ashworth Holmes School which opened for classes in 1909.  It was constructed on Ashworth Holmes Hill, the present day site of Mayfair Pool. Caswell Community School, the current elementary school in the neighbourhood, was constructed in 1910 and again named for Robert W. Caswell who farmed at this location. Bedford Road Collegiate is the public secondary school.

Ashworth-Homes Park is 12.68 acres and gets its name from J.H. Holmes and John Ashworth.  These realtors of the early 1900's purchased most of the land now named Caswell Hill.  They subdivided the land and sold it but donated 10 acres to the City which became this park.

Caswell Park also boasts one public outdoor pool, Mayfair Pool, which has a mini-waterslide.
