Through one of my associations with the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, I was introduced to a lovely lady named Fanny Villarte. And because of my involvement with the Laurelwood Neighbourhood Association, I enquired about the possibility of having Fanny’s adorable little children’s choir entertain a group of eager children and their parents at our annual Christmas Tree Lighting event. I love networking!
When I learned that this choir had already been requested for two other gigs for the same evening, I became even more eager to book them. And when Fanny showed a willingness to trek the kids to three different places, I knew that she must be some choir director.
So, in a very crowded Fire Station on Columbia Street in Waterloo, this past Saturday, Fanny made a wonderful introduction and we were blessed! For the past 11 years, Voces del Sur (Spanish for Voices from the South), has been lovingly directed by Fanny. This choir was a real hit at our event, and really made the time pass while we waited for the arrival of Santa Claus.
Just a little tidbit of information that I found interesting. Many of the parents of the choir members want their children involved with this choir because it helps them to maintain their native language. Such a great idea! And so much fun to be a part of a community that celebrates so many different cultures. I lived in Florida for 13 years and was surrounded by Spanish, but realize more and more that if you don’t use it, you lose it. I think I’ll try to stay in touch with my new friend and she can help me brush up on my skills.
En Espanol, (A VERY LOUD) muchos gracias, mis amigos!
