Halton Hills achieves platinum youth friendly designation

March 31, 2014 Halton Hills achieves platinum youth friendly designation HALTON HILLS, ON – The Town has earned the prestigious platinum Play Works Youth Friendly Community Designation.

The youth friendly program acknowledges the great effort of some communities in ensuring their youth (ages 13 - 19) have continuous access to a diversity of 'play' (play being anything a young person does in their free time which could include: sport, recreation, drama, dance, music, the arts, volunteerism, leadership development, service leadership and/or civic engagement).

To achieve the platinum designation, a community must meet all 16 criteria set out by Play Works. Play Works is a partnership of leading organizations that formed in 2003 and who are concerned and committed to ensuring a strong future for the youth of Ontario. “This designation reaffirms our Council’s commitment to supporting and engaging youth in our community and it portrays some very important values that our community holds true for our citizenry,” said Mayor Rick Bonnette.

Five years ago the Town earned the silver designation, after achieving 12 of the 16 criteria. Since then the Halton Hills Mayor’s Youth Action Committee (MYAC) has built on that earlier success to introduce enhancements that better serves the needs of youth in our community. Research has found that being a youth friendly community has direct benefits on the Town, such as:

Providing an expression of support and commitment to youth in our community.
Helps to avoid migration of young people to other communities by encouraging local youth to help guide the future of their own community.
Families are attracted to communities that provide programs and services that support the arts, culture, sport and civic responsibility.

In its application the Town was able to provide evidence of ways in which it meets all of the platinum criteria and is supporting and serving the youth of our Town. The designation is for five years at which time the Town will need to reapply. “We are proud of this designation, but we won’t be resting on this achievement. We will continue work to maintain and improve on our designation for the ultimate benefit of the young people in our Town,” added Mayor Bonnette.
