You would be hard pressed to find someone who has an investment bigger than their own home, yet it's the one possession that people know the least about. Unfortunately there is no manual that comes with a house, so people often don't know the very basic 'need to know' things until it's too late.
Here are the three most important things that every homeowner should know, even if you have a handyman dad or are married to Fix It Felix:
1) Know the location of gas and water shut off valves
If there is a gas or water leak in your house the first thing to do is to shut off the main supply line which will stop it from coming in to the house.
2) Know the location of your electrical panel
If you don’t have power in part of your house the most likely cause is a tripped breaker, which you will find in your electrical panel.
3) Change furnace filter every three months if you have central air.
If you forget to change your furnace filters, your home won’t get the necessary airflow required to heat or cool your house properly, and will make the furnace work harder, resulting in a reduced life expectancy and higher bills.
