Federal ID Requirements (Fintrac)

On June 23, 2008 new federal money laundering and anti-terrorist financing regulations came into effect.  These new rules require all real estate agents and brokers to collect personal identification information from buyers and sellers.  Real estate brokers and agents as well as banks, credit unions, life insurance companies, secruties dealers to name a few, are now required to obtain their clients date of birth from a government issued identification document such as a driver's license, passport or residency card.  The Real Estate Brokerage is required to keep this information for a 5 year period.  Additional information is available at www.fintrac-canafe.gc.ca or you can call toll free 1-866-346-8722.
