Charleswood is a small, but well-rooted community located in the northwest quadrant of Calgary. Lying east of Crowchild Trail NW and the University of Calgary, Charleswood is a great location for commuters and young families. The community is comprised of under 3,500 residents, the majority of which are between the ages of 35 and 54 (City of Calgary, 2011). In this modest community, most of the homes are single detached with a small subset of apartments.
For the shoppers in the family, Brentwood Shopping Center, Northland Mall, Market Mall and the downtown core are all close by. If that doesn’t quench your thirst for shopping, the popular Chinook Mall is a mere 35 minutes south.
Charleswood is home to several fantastic schools. The Banff Trail Bilingual School (K-6), and Senator Patrick Burns Junior High (5-9) are both within the bounds of the community (Calgary Board of Education, 2012). A short distance away are schools in the neighboring community of Cambrian Heights: Cambrian Heights Elementary School (K-6), Highwood Elementary (K-1), Rosemont Elementary (K-6), Collingwood Elementary (K-4) (ibid).
With the young ones, health is always important. In case of emergency, the Alberta Children’s Hospital and the Foothills Medical Centre are both minutes from Charleswood.
If you love the outdoors but are unable to get to the mountains during the week – Nose Hill Park and Confederation Park are both a stones throw away from the community of Charleswood. Nose Hill Park alone covers 11 square kilometers of space and has numerous hiking trails for your enjoyment (City of Calgary, 2011). For the golfers in the family, the 9-hole Confederation Park Golf Course borders the community and is a great place to enjoy a round!
Commute? A short 30-minute train from from the University and Brentwood LRT stations will get you to the heart of downtown. For those who prefer to commute by automobile, Crowchild Trail is next door to the community.
