The new chemotherapy unit was officially opened by staff at the St.Thomas Elgin General Hospital Thursday (Apr 18) in correlation with Cancer Awareness Month.
The unit is one of many changes to the hospital as it undergoes planned expansions by the province and is now situated on the ground floor of the south building.
The unit currently houses six chairs, as opposed to the 6 in the old location. Hospital CEO Paul Collins says additional chemotherapy treatments are expected to help accommodate more people despite fewer chairs.
About 2000 patients per year are treated locally and that number is hoped to increase ever futher as the Care Close to Home program is rolled out.
