The ultimate goal in landscaping is timeless beauty.
Before diving right into a big outside project, you need to consider a couple things. Landscaping is a long term project, so it makes sense to make all the necessary inquiries and take the extra pre-cautions. You don’t want to sell yourself short and end up with an unsatisfying result that only lasts a couple years. Preparing the site properly and not rushing into it is an absolute must. A sunken living room is one thing, but a sinking patio is a slight issue. If you do plan out a large patio or hard surface area, consider how the drainage will change – improper drainage is the number one cause of hardscape designs failing so don’t over look it. Call in the experts – it’s more than worth it.
If possible, think of a few words to describe your finished product – your vision. With so many different materials and options, doing this will help keep you on track when deciding what features will complement each other and which ones will conflict. Your finished product should have only one or two main features, a focal point. If you create an area with too many big features it will look scattered and confusing.
You need to do your research. When creating your outside space, you need to develop the entire site. If you sell the space short at the start, you could end up with a patio where you later decide you want a pond – If developing the whole space at once is too much too soon, you can finish it piece by piece knowing your final design will remain intact.
When choosing your materials, keep it simple. Don’t pick 6-7 different styles and use a bit of each one, stick to two maybe three in total and be sure that not only the materials complement each other, but they also complement the exterior of your home. Be sure to buy a bit excess of the materials you will use as it’s better to accent with the extra material than scramble to find other ones that match.
Considering the durability and style of material is often more cost effect than buying the cheapest materials. You will be more satisfied in the long run of having to scale back a project, than having a huge project that only lasts a couple years. Use your yard’s natural vegetation to your advantage, unless you live down south where complete stone or rock yards are practical, be sure to keep a balance between your hard surfaces and natural ones.
