Renters Beware – don’t get scammed online

Recently there have been two reports of the classic rental scam occurring in the Regina area.

Scammers use listing information to place ads on, Kijiji and Craigslist stating that a property is for rent, when it is not. The scammer then attempts to extract money from prospective renters in the form of a security deposit or first month's rent.

A few agents have been caught in this web where actual listings are advertised as rentals. Pictures are taken from the listing and posted with the rental ad. Scammers are getting craftier and using agent’s names to make the deal seem legitimate.

Usually, the person pretending to be the owner isn’t in the same town as the property or in the same country, he doesn’t own it and he only wants to get some easy money from the optimistic and gullible.

Craigslist states as its No. 1 rule: “Deal locally with folks you can meet in person — follow this one rule and avoid 99 percent of scam attempts.”
