Almost everyone sets goals or makes resolutions for a new year. In fact, it's one of the oldest seasonal traditions in history dating back to the 1790s.
Yet most people fail to achieve the goal they set for themselves. But why?
According to experts, people get overly-ambitious. They set too many goals, set goals that are unrealistic and virtually unattainable, or make commitments they couldn't possibly keep.
If you keep things simple, you have a much better chance of achieving your goals in 2014. Here's what many experts recommend:
1. Pick only one goal. If you work on one goal, rather than many, you'll be more likely to stay focused and on track, and less likely to feel overwhelmed. Once you start seeing results, you'll be even more motivated, and probably achieve the goal earlier in the year.
2. Create a simple plan. If you want to lose weight, for example, your plan might be to eliminate snacking, cut your carb intake in half, and go for a brisk half-hour walk each evening. It is easier to stick to this kind of goal.
3. Be accountable. Studies show that people are significantly more likely to stick to a plan if they feel accountable to someone else. Find a friend, partner or group to whom you will be responsible for regularly reporting your progress.
4. Celebrate the finish line. When you achieve a goal, make a big deal about it. It's an event you want to remember with pride. Remembering an achievement in a memorable way will motivate you to reach your other goals.
