If you live in Alberta you probably have been either affected by a property insurance claim yourself this year or know someone personally who has. Our weather isn’t just playing havoc with our properties, it is playing havoc with Insurance Markets.
In the past two years (not including this summer) Alberta alone accumulated 60% of all property claims for all of Canada. In the insurance industry this past year we saw increases in property insurance to reflect the last two years losses. Now the industry is reeling again due to the massive floods and hail damage incurred in the summer of 2013.
Insurers are trying to ease the burden of the losses by increasing deductibles in relation to weather related losses. Most companies we deal with have moved to $2500 deductibles in relation to wind, hail and water damages. The increase in deductibles keeps your premiums at a lower level. This is not to say your premiums are not going to go up. All across the board we are seeing property premiums on the rise. As your broker we do examine each and every renewal and see if there are any areas we can lower your premiums for you.
