Winnipeg’s New Garbage and Recycling Services
Responsibilities of Home Buyers and Sellers
We are providing all existing single-family residential properties (1 – 7 dwelling units) with one 240-litre garbage cart and one 240-litre recycling cart at no charge as part of the City of Winnipeg’s new garbage and recycling services. It is important for REALTORS®, and home buyers and sellers to know their responsibilities for these carts.
The carts are City property. Every cart is numbered and electronically tagged, so carts can be traced to each address.
Property owners will be responsible for
keeping the carts clean and in good repair,
storing the carts in a safe place (e.g., carport, garage, at the side of your house),
removing the carts from the street or lane after collection, and
replacing the carts if they are stolen or damaged.
If you are selling your home
Leave the carts in a safe place for the new homeowner.
If you are buying a home
We recommend that you account for the condition of the carts. If the carts are missing or need to be repaired, you will be responsible for the replacement / repair cost.
We will not collect garbage and recycling until the carts have been replaced or repaired.
