Hello friends :) As promised in a recent Facebook post, we have started to interview local northside businesses in Cape Breton as a special February feature on our blog. Stay tuned for daily posts for the month of February and meet some of our fabulous and talented entrepreneurs in Cape Breton!
As it is February 1st, we will be kicking things off with one of our local travel agengies, Cape Breton Travel :) Cape Breton Travel is owned and operated by Rachelle Brown and is located at 299 Commercial Street (Inside Escape Outdoors) in North Sydney, NS. Rachelle recently became situated in Escape Outdoors (July 2015) but has been in operation for about 5 years already!
I had the pleasure of meeting with Rachelle today to ask here a few questions about her experiences as a business owner in Cape Breton. Here is what she had to say:
Tell us about why you started this venture:
Well, with 24 years of travel experience from Cape Breton, it was a good opportunity to start my own business in a field I love! I really enjoy helping people create a wonderful, seamless vacation experience.
Tell us what it is that you feel you offer/bring to Cape Breton:
Often I offer information about our local area and tourism in Cape Breton to travelers, particularly from the ferry traffic. I like to hear the stories and share our culture and traditions with people from away. One unique thing I offer is the opportunity to shop for vacations on my website www.capebretontravel.ca for those who like to shop themselves but have the security of a travel agent for assistance. What makes it unique is the fact that the prices are comparable to discount travel sites like red tag, expedia, etc. but you aren't alone in the booking and are shopping locally ;)
Any big plans coming up?:
I just developed a Facebook page called Northside Shop Local https://www.facebook.com/search/top/?q=northside%20shop%20local where it's all about community support and boosting local businesses in our area. It's a fabulous network of entrepreneurs that everyone should check out and share.
What's the most important thing you learned about running your own business in Cape Breton:
Having a positive outlook always helps you get past any obstacles and generates a lot of support. It really comes down to what you put into something, you get back. It's very rewarding to have your own business and make your own hours with the flexibility. Also, I enjoy helping others and in turn helping the community grow.
What are your favorite things to do or places to visit in Cape Breton when you are not busy running the business?
I don't really have a limited amount of things I like to do here, one of the main things I enjoy about Cape Breton is the ability to take day trips or "staycations" anywhere; Ingonish, Baddeck, Sydney, etc, without much driving or costing too much. Cape Breton is so rich in tradition and history that almost any place you venture about is a great experience.
Thank you so much Rachelle Brown for taking some time to speak to us today and participating in our blog!!
