Day 25! Meet Judy O'Handley, owner and operator, of Judy's IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) Laser Hair Removal and Skin Treatment. Judy has been in this business for 5 years in May but has been doing electrolysis since 2001 shortly after moving to our beautiful province. She is currently located at 7 Convent Street (The Black Spoon Cafe) in the lower level, offering lots of privacy and personalized services :) We had the opportunity to speak with Judy today and get an inside look at what she has to offer! Check out what she is saying:
Tell us why you started this venture:
I had been studying electrolysis for a while and doing courses in Antigonish to make sure I was well trained and after running a car business with a partner previously, I knew that I wanted to start my own business in this! The first course I took was a 500 hour course and really taught me a lot about safe and effective ways to use electrolysis and I had even been getting treatments myself so I could really get a full experience. I was raising my daugther and so having flexible hours and staying close to home was also very important to me! At the time when I started, there were a couple places offering laser hair removal in the Sydney area but nothing on the Northside. In fact, the people in Sydney were very helpful in giving me tips and training to get my business started here, which was a very fortunate thing for me to encounter starting out :)
Tell us what you offer or bring to Cape Breton:
Well I am certified in laser hair removal and have taken several courses, including one in Mississauga, to keep current and well trained in my field. I like to offer diversity so I have also since added skin treatments to my business, which is really exciting to have here! The skin treatments that I help people with range from acne, rosacea, broken capillaries, fine lines, sun damage, age spots, and lots of skin rejuvenation :)
Any big plans coming up?:
I recently completed a 10 week training with the Cape Breton Partnership to help build my business and I learned all sorts of new and useful skills. I'm really excited to start putting them to good use and start promoting my business! The skin treatments are also relatively new and I am loving having the experience in that aspect now and people are loving it :)
What is the most important thing you learned about running your own business in Cape Breton?:
I learned that you have to constantly be learning and working your business in order to stay current. Also, I am a huge fan of continued education and training as things can change so quickly and you can easily be left behind if you are not paying attention!
What are your favorite things to do or places to visit in Cape Breton when you are not busy running your business?:
I love to visit my mom and dad :) My mom is now in a guest home and I cherish every day I get with her and especially seeing her smile! My dad is still at our family home and I also spend a great deal of time with him. They recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary so I think that's something extra special! I also love to visit my daughter in Edmonton when I can and take in some shopping!
Thanks so much Judy for taking some time out from clients to sit with us today! Stay tuned everyone for a giveaway in the near future with something special from Judy's IPL Laser Hair Removal and Skin Treatment...just in time for summertime :)
