An Education that never ends


The real estate business, like many others, is one that is constantly changing, evolving and

reinventing itself. So as you can imagine, there is a pressing need for those who work in this

business to continually educate themselves about new ideas, developments and issues. In fact, in

Ontario, every person who is registered to trade in real estate is required by the Real Estate

Council of Ontario (RECO) to attend continuing education courses in order to renew their


Every two years, registrants (which is what RECO calls persons registered to trade in real estate)

must complete 24 credits worth of mandatory, approved continuing education courses. The

number of credits offered for each course ranges from 1 to 20, and usually corresponds to the

number of hours required to complete the course.

Six of those 24 credits must be earned by completing the RECO Update, a six-hour course that

brings registrants up to date with all the latest legislative and regulatory changes that can affect

their practice of real estate. The RECO Update course is offered by the Ontario Real Estate

Association’s Real Estate College, which also offers many other courses and coordinates

continuing education for its members.

To earn the remaining 18 credits needed every two years, real estate professionals can choose

from a wide and varied menu of course options offered throughout the province. Course topics

range widely, and cover a variety of general themes such as tax and accounting, real estate legal

matters, investment properties, negotiation, technology applications and legal updates. Some

examples of recent course titles offered to Ottawa Real Estate Board members include Insurance

Concerns for Buyers, Money Laundering and Grow Houses, Subdividing Land, Harmonized

Sales Tax and Understanding the Elements of Home Showcasing.
