As a Real Estate Sales Representative, my only break from work is when I physically leave town. Imagine dozing off on the beach with the sound of ocean waves, seagulls, and children laughing in the background. It's your chance to escape everyday stress and just relax on vacation. Then, you are interrupted with an emergency call about an issue at your house! Nightmare, right?
The best way to avoid that situation is to prepare your house before you leave on vacation. Most of us know to put a light on a timer and make sure a friend has a key. Add some more steps and avoid having to deal with the stress of handling a situation while you are away.
It boils down to do a number of items in a few key areas:
1. Make it look like the home is occupied (timed light, newspaper pick-up, lawn mowed)
2. Take plumbing and electrical precautions (water-shut offs, unplug small appliances)
3. Have a friend or neighbour check on the house and be on-call
I recommend downloading the PDF version of a very comprehensive checklist available on the Protected Home website. The best preparation is to be organized, to have a check-list, and check it twice!
