PRODUCTION OF A SMARTPHONE GENERATES A LOT OF WASTE

In the wake of recent Environmental Meeting held in Paris, it is very educational to read a report published by the Swedish Environmental Research Institute (IVL) (http://www.ivl.se/download/18.4b1c947d15125e72ddab4c/1448871392858/B2444E+-+short+report+-+waste+footprint+and+env+cost_EN151105.pdf), on how wastes creates the production of certain types of goods, without which modern human ‘cannot’ survive. According to calculations, the production of modern mobile phones creates 86 kg of industrial waste per phone alone.

The IVL entertained a calculation of the volumes of waste generated during the production of 11 types of goods and estimated size. The calculations included electronic and electrical appliances, clothing and food products that people use in everyday life.

Experts noted that the greatest problem for the environment is creating electrical. At each stage of the life cycle of electrical appliances, such as resource extraction, production, manufacturing, electricity production, packaging and processing, a lot of waste is generated.

In particular, a mobile telephone has a number of different metals, plastics and other materials. The largest amount of waste is associated primarily with metals during their production.

Here are some data on the level of waste from other products: 1 kg of chicken meat - 860 grams of waste, 1 kg beef - 4 kg, 1 liter of milk - 97 grams, electric drill - 51 kg, cotton trousers - 25 kg, leather shoes - 12 kg, one newspaper – 25 g. Interestingly, record for waste belongs to notebooks, each of which leaves us with 1,200 kg of various materials, gone in the trash.
