Organic food continues its march into the hearts, souls, and stomachs of the world population.

 

According to the research conducted by the companies FiBL, IFOAM and Organic Monitor, 1800000 farmers in 162 countries around the world increased organic farming land by more than 37 million hectares in 2012, comparing to the previous year. Respectively, the world market of organic food increased by 4 billion USD and reached about 63 billion USD, demonstrating the profitability of the investments into this market.


Top-10 countries in organic food sales in 2012: USA, Germany, France, Canada, United Kingdom, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Japan, and Spain.


Top-10 countries in agricultural land in 2012: Australia, Argentina, China, USA, Spain, India, Italy, France, Germany, and Uruguay.


Top-10 countries in the number of organic producers in 2012: India, Uganda, Mexico, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Turkey, Italy, Peru, Spain, and Dominican Republic.


Therein, only two countries are present in all three categories: I guess, not surprisingly, Italy and Spain.

Interestingly, countries with largest consumption of organic food were Switzerland and Denmark with more than 160 Euro per person annualy.
