Home Maintenance for the Fall

As we continue to wake up with frost on our lawns and vehicles, it reminds us that the cold season is really here. Days are shorter and the autumn leaves line yards and roads. It seemed like only yesterday people were still enjoying sunny days in the park, but Fall is is here! Before it gets too cold, take some time to make sure your home is ready for the chilly months ahead.

CMHC has a fairly extensive checklist for regular home maintenance for all the seasons. Here are a few to keep in mind to keep your home warm and cozy this winter.

Weather Stripping: Replace worn out weather stripping to keep the warm air in and the cold air where it belongs - Outside!

Baseboard heaters: Vacuum the dust from your baseboard heaters and make sure they are in good working order.

Furnace or Heating System: It's recommended that you have your electric furnace or heating system serviced every two years, so keep that in mind too.

Foundation: Check to ensure that water isn't pooling or leaking into your basement. Look for cracks or imperfections, and seal them or if necessary, call a contractor.

Roof: Replace any broken shingles. Clean the debris from your eavestroughs and roof and make sure downspouts are draining properly.

Landscaping: Prune dead and dangerous branches from your property's trees to ensure they don't damage property during strong winds. Drain outdoor hoses and store them for the winter and bring your patio cushions inside.

There are a lot of advantages to keeping your home well maintained, like costly fixes that have been left unattended. Your home is one of the biggest investments in your life. It's worth the time and effort you put into it.
