Wakefield skate park gets $150K federal grant

The Wakefield skate park and sports pad project is getting a $150,650 federal grant.

That will cover nearly half the costs of the estimated $350,000 project and help pay for a concrete slab for ball hockey, basketball, inline skating and structures for skateboarding.

The funding, announced by Minister of Infrastructure and Communities Denis Lebel April 6, is coming from the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund. The project provides cash for various community projects.

The new park is slated for the Wakefield Community Centre land, where the current rink is located. Wakefield Recreation Association (WRA) president Pat Poitras said construction will start after Canada Day and the concrete will be ready for skateboarding and other activities by October. He said the project has already raised about $100,000, including a $25,000 grant from the Kraft Celebration Tour in 2010.
