In the past, roofing options were pretty limited. But in recent years a number of new colors, styles, textures, and roofing materials have become available. Are you considering re-roofing your home this summer? Take some time to explore what you can do. Here are a few ideas:
- Asphalt shingles - This is probably one of the most common roofing materials we see in and around Lethbridge. While the basic rectangular design is the most familiar, it is possible to have irregular patterns created by cuts on these shingles to give a different look and effect. Different colors and textures are also available. Some shingles have a fibreglass component in their make that can increase the lifespan of your roof from 20-25 years to 30-35 years.
- Metal roofing - While this is more common in the commercial sector, metal roofs are replacing the old tar and gravel roofs on low-slope (or no-slope) homes. They are amazingly resilient and have a lifespan of around 50 years. There's no comparison to the sound of rain on metal, and there are different color options for the sheets, as well.
- Tiles - These were traditional made of a baked clay material, but many tiles are a concrete mixture now. Not all structures can support this type of roof, but it is a traditional, solid option that is popular for its aesthetic appeal.
- Cedar shakes - Cedar shakes continue to make an appearance here and there, but there are several composite options that offer the look of shakes without using actual cedar wood. Asphalt shingles and concrete tiles can be made to look like cedar shakes, and other lookalike composites are becoming more widely available.
