Nearly a Quarter of Household Expenses in Québec Were Allocated to Housing in 2011

February 2013 - According to the results of Statistics Canada’s latest Survey of Household Spending (SHS), Quebecers spent an average of $49,239 on goods and services in 2011. Of this total, shelter, which includes rent, mortgage payments, maintenance and repair costs, property taxes and utilities, accounted for 24.8 per cent. Among the households that participated in the 2011 study, 26.7 per cent owned their dwelling and had a mortgage, while 33.8 per cent owned their dwelling but did not have a mortgage. In total, 60.4 per cent of respondents indicated they were homeowners and 39.6 per cent said they were renters.
