According to new population projections produced by the Institut de la statistique du Québec (ISQ), the population of Québec should reach 9.4 million people in 2036. The number of households is expected to reach 4.1 million.
By Census Metropolitan Area (CMA), Gatineau (+27 per cent) is expected to have the largest growth in total population by 2036, followed by Montréal (+22 per cent), Sherbrooke (+18 per cent), Québec City (+16 per cent), Trois-Rivières (+10 per cent) and Saguenay (+2 per cent). Only the Gatineau and Montréal CMAs will see an increase in the number of people between 20 and 64 years of age over the projection period, particularly due to international and interprovincial immigration. These two CMAs will also have the lowest proportion of seniors in their total population.
