Sustainable landscaping is the practice of using strategic methods for business and residential landscapes with the purpose of offsetting negative environmental impacts. As each region's local climate and soil quality varies, so do the methods used in sustainable landscaping. Water quality, plants chosen, and products such as fertilizers are selected with the goal of conservation, reducing chemical usage, and preventing erosion. Sustainable landscaping involves multiple areas and focuses on the original plan and design for landscapes as well as the construction stage. Additionally, environmentally friendly methods are used for implementing a sustainable landscape as well as ensuring that it is ecologically maintained.

Sustainable Landscaping

The field of sustainable landscaping continues to evolve. As the environment faces new challenges, man creates more technologies to address each problem. Whatever the environmental issue at hand, sustainable landscaping aims to correct it. In flood-prone areas, sustainable landscaping may focus on methods used to prevent soil erosion, while in desert areas, the emphasis may be on water conservation. Sustainable landscaping is the practice of assessing a region's environmental and ecological challenges and providing solutions. Sustainable landscaping provides several benefits and advantages. In addition to being environmentally friendly, many methods used save resources, water, time, and energy spent on maintenance. Many sustainable methods are cost-efficient over the long term.

Composting involves using natural processes in a controlled environment to speed up the decomposition of organic waste materials. There are several methods used in composting, and each produces organic, rich soil that is beneficial for yards and gardens. The three main types or methods of composting include recycling grass clippings, vermicomposting (using worms to facilitate the decomposition), and backyard composting. Composting doesn't require a great deal of space, and those who live in apartments can successfully start composting in small containers. Those who aren't squeamish at the thought may even practice vermicomposting on balconies or even on countertops. Composting helps reduce the amount of waste that enters landfills and water systems.

Organic Gardening

Organic gardening is the process of using natural, environmentally friendly methods as opposed to harsh chemicals in the gardening process. Organic gardening seeks to replenish vital nutrients in the soil throughout the gardening process. Composting plays a vital role in ensuring soil quality, and many conservation efforts are taken to ensure that water quality and quantity are maintained. If a problem arises in the garden, a safer, less toxic remedy is tried before chemical pesticides and insecticides are used. Many organic gardeners focus on preventing plant infestations and disease, rather than turning to chemical products as a cure-all solution. Organic gardeners also focus on producing plants and vegetables that contain little to no toxic substances as a result of careful diligence throughout the growing stage.

Other Outdoor Green Practices

As environmental conditions continue to pose a threat to health, efforts to find new, effective green practices continue. From conserving water when washing cars to ensuring that soil is replenished, there are many things people may do to reduce their carbon footprint. Outdoor activities can wreak havoc on the environment and pose a significant threat to air and water quality. Utilizing environmentally sound methods can help ensure that each does their part in taking care of earth's resources. If everyone does their part, we can help leave a healthy planet for future generations. Green technologies and practices are effective methods used for sustaining quality life on earth.
