Christmas Wishes – Eco-friendly Christmas Wrapping

Here at Century 21 Millennium we care about the environment and what we can do to protect it. Entertaining this year? Be naturally festive and don’t let your green choices fall by the wayside.

This Christmas why not save some money? Make your holiday wrapping stand out from the rest by getting creative and using things around the house for a ‘greener’ affair. Canadians toss some 545,000 tonnes of gift bags and wrapping paper into the garbage every year.

Rather than using traditional wrapping paper, try to personalize your gift-wrapping to the person that you’re giving gifts to. Use an old map, newspaper, old sheet music, comics, a sleeve from a sweater for wine or liquor, and cut out pictures from old cards. Pinecones as a bow, twine, yarn or just about anything that can be re-used instead of petroleum-based tape. There are many alternatives to the typical wrapping paper that you buy at the store.

You don’t have to get rid of the turkey and start using tofu (although you can purchase a tofurkey with all the fixin’s). Instead, look for naturally raised free-range or certified organic turkeys. Buying a turkey from the grocery store may be coming from the U.S.A. and they’re travelling a long distance using unnecessary fossil fuels. Reduce carbon emissions by supporting your local farmers wherever possible, and try to avoid factory practices.

Many families have already done their purchasing for Christmas day, yet there are many things that you can do to be ‘naturally festive’. For instance, when you set your table for guests over the holidays, try to use plates that are washable and cloth napkins that are dark in colour so you don’t need to use bleach to clean them afterward.

Sorting your garbage these days is confusing. Plastic without a number is not recyclable, although, clamshell containers are. In Simcoe Country, numbers 1,2,4,5, and 7 are recyclable. You’ll typically find the number symbol under the product. Remember that it is better to use a backyard composter for your veggie scraps, but if you don’t have one, the green bin may be the best alternative for your needs.

This holiday season turn over a new leaf, go ahead and explore original and environmentally friendly ways to entertain or throw a party and have a safe and happy holiday from all of us at Century 21 Millennium Inc.
