End of Season Boating Tips from Century 21 Millennium

The summer has come to an end with the colourful autumn leaves beginning to fall to the ground.  Preparation for the winter months is soon ahead so get out there on the water and relish in the final days on the pristine waters of Georgian Bay.

Century 21 Millennium wants to ensure everyone is safe while boating during this beautiful season.  So if you’re heading off to the cottage or just sticking around the area to boat, be safe!

Not only is Georgian Bay a sailing destination, the surrounding waters of the Bruce Peninsula offer it all - long stretches of beach to anchor off of including the longest fresh water beach in the world, Wasaga Beach, as well as protected coves with deep water for large-keeled vessels, and the unique, constant, wind patterns for sailing enthusiasts.

Here are some tips while boating on Georgian Bay:

  • Safe boating always includes wearing a personal floating device (PFD) while travelling on the waterways.
  • Always let someone know what your expected route may be.  In addition, the unique shape of the Niagara Escarpment provides for some interesting wind conditions - be aware.
  • The direction and intensity can change rapidly, and it’s important to take note of the weather forecast for your trip.
  • Watch for Piping Plover nests when beaching your watercraft.
  • Raise the motor when approaching shallow water.

Also, consult local charts for safe anchorages, as well as potential hazards such as jutting rocks or sunken ships.

But most of all, enjoy your boating adventure – with fair winds, calm waters and breathtaking views of Georgian Bay.
