Budgeting for a remodel

So you have decided to renovate and remodel your home, or a room in your home. This is an exciting endeavour and now that you have made the decision, you can`t wait to hit the stores and start buying. Caution! Costs can skyrocket out of control if you do not have direction when you begin. In other words, it is essential that you are prepared and have a budget in mind.

Creating a budget will allow you to remain on track when making design decisions, give you direction and keep you in check at all times. If you have picked one room to renovate, chances are you already have a maximum dollar amount that you are prepared to spend on the renovation. This is a good starting point, but knowing just the end number isn`t enough to start hitting the stores. It is important that you take that end number and break it down more thoroughly. For example, if you are renovating the kitchen, allot how much you want to spend on paint, cabinets, countertops, accessories, etc… If you have decided you are doing granite countertops, this might mean that you have to spend less in another category.

Know your priorities at all times during the renovation. This will help you not to be sidetracked. Keep focused and be reasonable when making design decisions. Having a thorough budget will help to keep you on track and help you avoid overspending.
