Creating a safe home for you and your family

Safety in the home is very important, and even more so when little children are involved. Many injuries happen in the home and there are certain things you can do to eliminate hazards and make your home a safe place. See below for some tips for a safe home environment:

  • Store cleaning materials and hazardous products in high cupboards so that children can’t reach them
  • Keep medicine out of children’s reach (if necessary, lock a cabinet)
  • If you have a pool, be sure to have a fence around it
  • Cover electrical outlets
  • Install a smoke alarm and a carbon monoxide detector. Be sure to test the alarms every month and change batteries regularly
  • Keep fire extinguishers in the house. Have one close to the kitchen
  • Clear clutter on staircases and floors to avoid unnecessary trips and falls
  • Be prepared for an emergency. Have a list handy with emergency phone numbers
