Design Tips to Last

With what seems like millions of television programs, magazines, articles and guides all focusing on design and renovations in the home, it is sometimes overwhelming for homeowners considering making some design changes to their home. There are however, a few design tips that seem to be timeless. If you are considering making some changes to your home, see below for some guidance to get you started.

Budget: Before you start to look at options, designs and new appliances or furniture, figure out a reasonable and accurate budget. This will allow you to walk in to a store with a well-defined idea of what you can spend.

Focus: A whole home can be an overwhelming renovation to undertake. Before you begin any renos or design changes, decide what your main focus or goal will be for your home. Is it to do a quick, cheap update to a certain room? Or is it to undertake a full-out kitchen reno? Be sure to be focused before you hit the stores.

Feel: Think about the type of feel you want in the home or particular room you are considering changing. Are you going for a modern, crisp look? Or would you prefer a warm, cozy inviting room? By knowing what feel you are going for, you will have more direction when you start to choose paint colours or accessories.

Practicality: It’s easy to be swayed by super-modern looks or to go for over-the-top design trends, but be sure to be practical when making design choices. If you have children in the home, you will most likely want to make sure that the room or home you are renovating is kid-friendly (i.e., you might not want to go for the ‘all-white’ look). Be sure whatever design choices you are making, you can see yourself and your family living in it comfortably.
