Fall maintenance over the long weekend

With the extra day this weekend, it is a good time to take care of some fall maintenance around the home. Before the cooler weather and shorter days set in, homeowners should take advantage of the extra time to prepare their homes for the upcoming winter season. Here are a few maintenance tips that you may want to consider:

Clean out Gutters & Downspouts: Clean out your gutters and ensure that all downspouts are clear. With the leaves falling, it is easy for gutters and downspouts to get clogged with debris.

Check windows & doors: Do a thorough check of all windows and doors to ensure that there is no air getting in the house. If necessary, fill any spots with caulking.

Yard Maintenance: Rake regularly and keep your lawn tidy. Use bags to capture leaves and debris. Clean and store patio furniture that you will not need throughout the winter months.

Heating: Before the winter cold sets in, check out your heating system and be sure to change the filter in your furnace. Stock up on filters so that you can change them regularly.

Fireplaces & Chimneys: If you have a wood burning fireplace, stock up on wood for the winter. Consider having your chimney swept if necessary.

There are many things you can do to prepare your home for the winter months ahead. Staying on top of maintenance can save you money and prevent damage on your home. Take advantage of the extra time this weekend to get a head start. Happy Thanksgiving!
