Making a small space feel big

Whether you are downsizing in home space, or living in an apartment or condo or perhaps just want to give your home a new look and feel, there are a lot of tips and tricks to help your small spaces feel and appear much bigger than they are.

One of the easiest and most affordable ways to create the illusion of a bigger space is in your choice of paint colour. Stick to light, warm tones that won’t overwhelm. Darker paint colours can make a space feel much smaller than it actually is. Warm neutrals, such as cream, white, beige or soft greens will help to provide a roomier feel to your space.

As always, reducing the amount of clutter can help any space feel larger. In small spaces particularly, it is important to keep furniture and décor to a minimum. Use only what you need. Large oversize couches and armchairs can overwhelm a small space, so be sure to make furniture choices that are proportionate to your space.

Mirrors are a great way to create the illusion of a bigger space. Not only do they trick the eye into believing there is more space, but they also reflect light which helps to open up any space. Using materials like glass in small spaces can also help to reflect light and open up the room.

There are many ways in which you can make your small space feel larger and more open. Use the above tricks to get you started.
