Moving Tips

Moving is one of the most stressful times for people, however, with a bit of organization and planning, moving can be less daunting and less stressful for you! Use the below tips to assist you in your move.

Before your move date:

  • Create a file or binder to keep all paperwork related to your move in one place (Keep all receipts as some moving expenses may be tax deductible)
  • Stock up on moving supplies (boxes, wardrobe boxes, bubble wrap, packing paper, pens and tape)
  • Take an inventory of all that you have – donate any items that you no longer need and/or use
  • Cancel newspapers, subscriptions and any regular services that your home may receive
  • Get your car serviced before you move
  • Obtain all medical and dental records and refill any prescriptions
  • Leave your new contact information with your neighbours or friends should anything arise after you have moved

Packing & The Moving Day:

  • Be sure to set aside items that you will need right away or during your move – start a suitcase that contains all clothing and/or personal items that you would like readily accessible
  • Wrap all fragile items and special mementos with bubble wrap and packing paper
  • Be sure to label each box with what the general items are inside and what room it will belong in
  • Put heavier items at the bottom of each box
  • Wardrobe boxes are a great way to keep your clothes organized and to save you time when unpacking at your new home
  • Once you are all packed, make sure to double-check every room, closet and cupboard

At Your New Place:

  • Upon arrival, ensure that all major utilities are working (electricity, water etc…)
  • Give the place a good clean (scrub bathrooms, kitchens, cupboards etc…)
  • Unpack those items that you will need first – I find the kitchen is a good place to start, as well as bedrooms/bedding and bathrooms
  • Once you have unpacked and are settled into your new home, be sure to set up new insurance, health cards, bank accounts, licensing etc. if necessary
  • Find new doctors and dentists
  • Introduce yourself to your new neighbours

With preparation, planning and organization a move can be a smooth transition.
