The Snowbird Lifestyle: Preparing to Leave

As the harsh winter months are approaching, it is important that those heading south for the winter, start preparing their home. It is increasingly popular for Canadians to live the ‘snowbird’ lifestyle and head to sunnier and warmer destinations over the winter. Before you pack up and head south, be sure to prepare your home. See below for some tips to help you be better prepared:

  • Be sure to bring all outdoor furniture inside or into storage.
  • Empty all garbage cans and give the house a good clean
  • Clean out the fridge and freezer completely
  • Turn off all hoses and unhook so that they don’t freeze
  • Consider installing timers for your exterior lights so that it appears that people are home
  • Have a neighbour or family friend pop by frequently to ensure that your home is safe
  • Cancel all newspapers and subscriptions and have your mail forwarded to your southern destination
  • Cancel your garbage pick up
  • Arrange for someone to maintain your driveways and walkways during snow falls
  • Lock all windows and close some blinds (leaving a few open makes it appear someone is home)
  • Do not leave a message on your answering machine saying you are out of town
  • Store all valuables somewhere safe
  • Send an address change to ensure that you get all important bills and mail items
  • Finally, be sure to lock all doors leading into the house
