Construction of housing of all kinds in Regina last year saw a significant increase over 2011, according to reports by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. In Regina and surrounding communities 1,289 single-detached units were started, a 35% increase over 2011. Condominium, rowhouses and apartments saw an even great increase - starts rose by 83% to 1804 units (736 in 2011).
The Regina & District Home Builders Association say the results are incredible. Last year's totals are 130% above the already impressive 5-year average for home starts in Regina and 157% above the 10-year average.
Housing starts in 2012 increased in most cities in the province including Saskatoon - 25%, Yorkton - 17%, Prince Albert - 53%. Moose Jaw -90%, and The Battlefords - 43%.
As the province continues to see an increase in population and a strong economy, Regina and Saskatoon are attracting new national retailers.
