Branding and Partnership
Branding & Partnerships
In 2013, the West End Business Improvement Association (WEBIA) will continue to focus its efforts on branding and partnerships.
We're thrilled to announce the creation of an exciting new brand for the West End that will help us unify and elevate the area for our customers. Creative B'stro, in partnership with Nixey Communications, has now entered Phase Two of this branding project. While Phase One focused on research and strategy, Phase Two centres on theme development. Both phases will result in a much-anticipated creative brief that will guide a new visual identity and brand messaging/tag line for the area. Our new brand will launch just before the busy tourism season. Stay tuned!
Please contact Stephen Regan at 604.696.0144 or s.regan@westendbia.com if you would like more information on the branding process.
Partnerships will continue to help drive our mission to "brand, promote and revitalize the West End."
To this end, the Board has made a decision to postpone the West End Festival (formerly Davie Day) and, instead, focus the association's attention on building promotional partnerships with some major events that already take place in the area (e.g. Celebration of Light, Pride Festival and Car Free Day, to name a few).
We are also reaching out to build partnerships with the West End Coal Harbour Community Police Office, Coastal Health, West End Cleanup and other groups to help keep our commercial streets clean and safe.
Webia in Action
West End Plan - WEBIA is continuing to work with the City through the West End Planning process. That process has now reached Phase Two, in which the City will create, test and refine options in the areas of zoning, design standards and public realm improvements. The City will also host "walkshops" in March. Stay Tuned for notices and invitations.
800 Block Robson Closure - The WEBIA staff - along with area MLA Herbert Spencer, the Robson Street BIA, the Downtown Vancouver BIA and the West End Seniors Network - recently met with TransLink to better understand the issues associated with permanently closing Robson Street at the 800 block (Robson Square).
WEBIA is against this permanent closure. Along with voicing our opposition, we are asking for a continuous transit loop that connects Robson, Denman, Davie and Granville streets - as well as changes to parking regulations allowing for more street parking and flexibility to create wider sidewalks.
WEBIA will meet with the City in the coming days and will ask for a comprehensive review of the downtown transportation network. While the best-case scenario for transit is a free flowing street through the 800 block, it is possible to develop ways to work around a closure.
Neighbourhood Changes
In our November e-News, we listed some 40 new businesses that opened in 2012. In the last few months, the area has seen even more businesses opening their doors.
One of the most exciting new businesses that recently opened on Robson Street is the Stewart Stephenson Modern Art Gallery, located at 1300 Robson Street (corner of Robson and Jervis). The Modern Art Gallery neighbours the Listel Hotel's new forage restaurant with a distinct sustainability theme.
The popular Jang Mo Jib Korean Restaurant moved from 1719 Robson to a much larger space at 1525 Robson, former home of Blockbuster Video.
In December, the old SuperValu (Jervis and Davie) was transformed into the bright and stylish Independent Grocer.
Sadly, we mourn the loss of an iconic Greek restaurant Characters (Thurlow at Davie), as well as Maria's Taverna and Denman Cinemas on Denman Street.
These are just some of the recent changes in the West End's commercial streets. The West End - and WEBIA is - full of change and renewal, and there is still more positive change to come. In the coming year, WEBIA will be working on attracting and retaining businesses to our dynamic West End neighbourhood.
