Assessing your tax assessment

The 2009 tax assessments are out. We all have until February 2nd to make a formal appeal if we disagree with the assessed value of our property. This year the assessments are a little different. The BC Government has decided to use the lower of the last two assessments if no change has occurred to your property (the value as of July 1, 2008 or the value as of July 1, 2007). This is designed to provide stability and certainty for property owners whose assessments would likely have been higher than market value due to significant declines in BC real estate markets since mid-2008, says the BC Assessment authority in the information pamphlet included with the assessment notice.
