Five Facts you didn’t know about Waterdown, Ontario

With new housing developments popping up right, left and center Waterdown is expanding to be a household name. A great town located on the outskirts of Hamilton, here are five facts you may not yet know:

1)   Waterdown is haunted

In 1934 there were several sightings of a tall phantom ghost with large feet. Sightings became so frequent that townspeople were too scared to go outside after dark. While it is believed that the ghost eventually made his way to Toronto, the truth behind the mysterious sightings were never solved. To learn more about the Waterdown Ghost click here.

2)   Alcohol is responsible for Waterdown’s name

Alcohol was all the rage in the Victorian Age. When Ebenezer Griffin was seen drinking water he was told to throw his “water down.” The village carpenter heard waterdown and the name stuck ever since.

3)   The Farmers’ Market is back and here to stay

On June 7, 2014 the Farmers’ Market will be hosting their grand opening at the Royal Canadian Legion. Over 20 local vendors will be taking part in the event and more are still signing up! To read about the vendors visit the Farmers’ Market website.

4)   Waterdown’s population is expected to double in the next five years

It’s no surprise that Waterdown is a growing city but did you know that the population is expected to DOUBLE in the next five years? That will make Waterdown’s population close to 40,000 people and dramatically increase Waterdown’s property value.

5)   Waterdown is one of the best cities to be for small business owners

Waterdown’s Business Improvement Area (BIA) was created to support local businesses. Not only does the area support over 240 local businesses, it also plans and hosts events such as the upcoming Farmers’ Market. As Jim R. from Waterdown wrote, the BIA “lists many professionals in all types of business to help our community find the best possible services no matter what the category!”
