The Beach & Howe CondominiumTower is in the pre-construction stage, but it has set the architecture and design world abuzz with its utterly original twisted, tapered and textured bottom that expands into a grander profile as it rises above the Granville Street Bridge. The 150-metre-high skyscraper is only the most visible component of what is certain to be a vibrant condominium and retail development positioned on both sides of the bridge. Architectural renderings from Danish Architects BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group) depict a tower primed to become a coveted destination for architectural tourists and a Vancouver talking point for years to come.

The Vancouver buzz over this condominium development is sure to translate into enormous buying attention. Contact me today to discuss how you could live in a building already being referred to as the most daring design in Vancouver’s modern history.

Beach & Howe is located at the northeast corner of (surprise!) Beach Avenue and Howe Street in Downtown Vancouver. Centrally located a block from the seawall. Old Yaletown is a 5 minute walk away and George Wainborne Park and the Aquabus to Granville Island and beyond are both a 2 minute walk away.

Beach & Howe Tower—Talk of the City

Even in this early stage, the talk about the Beach & Howe condominiums is focusing on its potential to reinvent Vancouver’s architectural image. Comparisons are coming in from architectural enthusiasts everywhere, comparing the tower to New York’s Flatiron Building and also to part of Las Vegas’ striking recent City Center development.

And yet, this Westbank development is not just a thing of beauty; it’s foremost a place to call home. Plans call for 600 residential units and a surrounding retail complex that has the potential to completely update and re-energize the Granville Street Bridge area.

Inspired Condominium Development and Plaza Design

The Westbank and BIG proposal for the Beach & Howe tower is capturing attention for its thoughtful and creative design. The innovative tower is not only eye-catching, but its tapered profile ensures that none of the condominiums will look out over the Granville Street Bridge.

Instead, residents will look down onto the proposed grass roofs of the development’s retail components on either side of the bridge. As part of the public plazas, Westbank also hopes to create a stunning outdoor art gallery to add to the creative energy of the development.

Development Team for Beach & Howe

Westbank is a Vancouver condo leader and one of Canada’s premier real estate developers. Their 188 Keefer building was featured recently in this very blog. They are also responsible for  the popular 60 West Cordova apartment project, the Fairmont Pacific Rim, the redevelopment of the former Woodward’s site, and Shangri-la Vancouver.

BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group) are the Copenhagen-based architectural masterminds behind this new condo tower. Their approach speaks for itself: “By hitting the fertile overlap between pragmatic and utopia, we architects once again find the freedom to change the surface of our planet, to better fit contemporary life forms.” The monstrous number of architectural and design projects BIG has undertaken in the last decade—each of which is jaw-droppingly original—are evidence of the power of their vision.

Dialog, Cobalt Engineering, Phillips Farevaag Smallenberg Urban Design, Buro Happold, Glotman Simpson, and James KM Cheng Architects have also provided key input.
