Historic Downtown Oakville's BIA

Downtown Oakville, hotelDid you know that the Business Improvement Area (BIA) concept was first pioneered in Toronto? As key community builders, the BIAs in the Halton area serve to keep our beautiful towns not only liveable but aspirational as well. It's no wonder so many people want to move here!

I was thrilled when Downtown Oakville was declared a Heritage District, so I thought I would start there in a series of profiles on Halton's BIAs and their unique initiatives.

Here are some of my favourite initiatives born of the Downtown Oakville BIA. I'll talk about other Halton BIAs in upcoming blogs, so stay tuned!

The Parking Token Program

The Parking Token Program was created to offer Downtown Oakville customers and business employees $1.00 of free parking, compliments of participating downtown businesses.

In Downtown Oakville there are over 2,800 convenient parking spaces and with this new token program these spaces are even more accessible. All you have to do is look for businesses that display the "Ask us about our Parking Token Program" sign. There, you will receive a $1 token, good for all downtown electronic meters, Municipal Parking Lots and at the Municipal Parking Garage.

Would you like to start up a business in Downtown Oakville? The BIA has a ton of tools to help you out! They perform detailed monthly surveys of pedestrian traffic and postal code tracking, so businesses can know they're customers better. They also employ a network of volunteers for a Business Watch program, so that neighboring businesses can be alerted immediately when a crime is committed.

Work Downtown, Shop Downtown Discounts

BIA members and employees don't just work in Downtown Oakville. They shop there too. The BIA aims to bring the community closer by encouraging members to offer discounts to other members. It's a win-win!
