School starts, temperatures dip and leaves begin turning colour; September is full of change and it's a great time to tackle a few pre cold-weather home maintenance tasks.
1. SERVICE YOUR FURNACE
With dropping temperatures just around the corner, it's a great time to ensure that your furnace is in tip-top shape. Call your local HVAC company to service your furnace now, before they get too busy when everyone else is calling after they realize theirs doesn't work and it's already below freezing. While you're at it, having your A/C cleaned and serviced will put you a step ahead next spring when it's time to get it running again.
2. LUBRICATE YOUR GARAGE DOOR
Garage doors are exposed to extreme temperatures during winter months, which plays havoc on the mechanics of them. Items such as locks, hinges, bearings and the tracks should be lubricated to ensure you're never left locked out of the house with a inoperable door. Use a Lithium, Silicon based spray or one designed specifically for garage doors -- not your traditional WD30.
3. EXTERIOR PAINTING
September is a great time to have your exterior painting completed as temperatures settle to more comfortable levels. Having things such as your exterior doors painted is especially good at this time of year as the doors need to remain open for a while to allow for adequate drying before closing.
