Located on the edge of the Niagara Escarpment just east of the junction of hwy 5 and 6 known as Clappisons Corners sits Waterdown Ontario, once a small town but now a vastly growing community.
According to Exploring the Past; Waterdown written by Parker and Woods, it was the arrival of Ebinezer Culver Griffin in 1823 that marked the true beginning of the Village of Waterdown, it was Griffin that had his property surveyed into lots in 1830.
According to a local story it was also Griffin that gave Waterdown its name. Griffin was a prohibitionist thus did not approve of the extensive amounts of alchol being consumed during the Victorian Age, including the tradition of whiskey being used to christen new mills. Its been said that during the christening of one of Ebinezers new mills someone from the crowd called out "hey Ebinezer throw that water down!" Hearing this Ebinezer named his mill Waterdown following this the village also was named Waterdown.
Settlers and Industiralists soon established themselves in village life. Mills sprouted along the banks of the Grindstone Creek also known as Smokey Hollow for the smog caused by the many mills. This same area is to this day is widly known as one of the Great Falls in Hamilton. Smokey Hollow can be entered of off Mill Street in Waterdown follow the steps and one can look over the falls. Hikers can continue on to the Bruce Trail as it weaves along the Niagara Escarpment.
Smokey Hollow Falls is just of the many great attractions of Waterdown Ontario. Since moving to Waterdown I have had the great fortune to experience all the great things that this growing community has to offer. If your looking for that small town with all the conveniences and proximity to larger cities this is it. Waterdown has the perfect mix of Small town meets all the amenities of a larger city.
Whether you are Downtown having warm apple fritters at Brown Dog cafe or at the Watermark having dinner this town will feel like home if your doing home improvements Rona is just a short drive down hwy 5 into the newer area fully equipped with a Walmart and Starbucks.
