Ancaster is a picturesque and historic community located on the Niagara Escarpment within the greater area of the city of Hamilton. It was founded officially in 1793 and is one of the oldest European communities established in present day Ontario. Ancaster is known for its historical village core, recreational walking trails and their variety of restaurants, pubs and shops.
Landmarks/ Things to do in Ancaster
The Hermitage is a popular site in Ancaster. In 1830 it was the property of Reverend George Sheed. It changed hands many times before burning to the ground in 1943. The shell of the old house and surrounding buildings can still be visited today. It is said to be haunted. Ghost tours run through the summer with tour guides telling haunted stories of the land and surrounding county.
Another popular site would be the Griffin House, which was associated with the underground railway. The house was owned by Enerals Griffin, who was an Africian American immigrant from Virginia. He settled in Ontario in 1834. They offer tours through the house and Black- History related programs as part of the Black Heritage Network.
If you are visiting Ancaster during late September, make sure to stop in at the annual Ancaster Fair. There is music and live entertainment for all ages,Buskers, Old MacDonalds Farm where you can "Come walk and talk with the animals". There is also an Antique Car and Tractor Show, Pony Rides, Vendors, Horse Shows, Baby Shows, and the Smash Up Derby.
For people who enjoy hiking, the Bruce Trail goes through Ancaster as it links Queenston with Tobermory. The famous walking path goes through part of the Dundas Valley Conservation Area and crosses the Hamilton to Brantford Rail Trail. This offers four seasons of recreation for walkers, cyclists, horse riders, snowshoers and cross country skiers.
