Demystify Social Media

Since Social Media has become such a big part of our society I have a few thoughts I'd like to share on the subject.

When any of my colleagues ask me about if they should get on Social Media I ask “Why do you want to be on?”. If you don’t why, then that is the first question you need to answer. If it’s because “everyone else is doing it” then you are going to be wasting your time.

If you decide to participate in Social Media then it's more important as to why you are doing it  versus what you are doing. You don’t need to hit every Social Media out there. Find one that fits for your personality and what you want to do and run with it!  It needs to be used as an engagement vehicle not an information vehicle. It is called “social media" for a reason so you want interaction. People that only put business information and requests for business on are QUICKLY unfollowed.

A big part of engaging is becoming “knowable”, not “known”. Make friends via Social Media by participating in conversation and getting to know people’s likes, dislikes, pet names, etc.  Don’t post anything you wouldn’t want your Grandmother to see. If you are unsure if you should post something or not…err on not doing it.

You will need to know your audience (sport, community, friends) and a few of the subjects you can talk about are:

  • Community information/events
  • Personal antidotes
  • The occasional business event
  • Family happenings
  • Things that you think are funny

Remember…Social Media is interaction between people.

Give value in Social Media (and everything you do) and it will come back to you.
