I am delighted to announce that, as a direct result of the New Brunswick Real Estate Association's new Government Relations program, the provincial government has officially identified property taxes as a key election campaign issue.
NBREA demanded government action on property taxes at a major news conference held in Saint John on August 5 th. This resulted in several days of dominant media attention and coverage right across Atlantic Canada, and even a national newswire distribution. Stories focused on NBREA's call to action and the recommendations we put forth in our new discussion paper, A Discussion About Property Taxation in New Brunswick.
Our strategy was hugely successful. A week after our news conference, Premier Shawn Graham pledged to freeze assessments for two years if the Liberals were re-elected. He also pledged to strike a committee of stakeholders to develop solutions to property tax problems. We were informed that the New Brunswick Real Estate Association would serve on that committee.
It's important to note that NBREA will not endorse any particular political party in this election campaign. Rather, our strategy will remain focused on keeping the issue of property assessment and taxation in the spotlight. We will also continue to monitor where each of the registered political parties stand and what their proposals might be.
We need your help. Please download the NBREA Property Tax Policy booklet, and take a few minutes to become familiar with the proposals. If you are faced with an opportunity during the campaign to speak to one of the candidates, please make sure they know how important property tax reform is to REALTORS®, our clients and the future of our province.
You can also get involved - and ask others to share their perspective - on the NBREA Facebook page. Simply clicking ‘like’ on our page will allow you to receive our updates and help spread he word to your own Facebook network.
Please join me in congratulating the members of the NBREA Government Relations Committee. In a short period of time, with the additional resources you gave them, they have built a successful strategy that shows how deeply REALTORS® care about their communities.
